How Two Geeks Hand-Print Their Tolkien T-Shirts

We are Buu and Mr Viking and we've been hand-printing geek apparel from our workshop since day one. No mass production. No outsourced factories. Just us, our designs, and the process we have refined print by print.
All Artworks Designed by Us
All of our artwork and designs are made right here by us, driven by genuine admiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. We approach each idea with reverent attention to detail, double-checking all references against the books and appendices. While we love to get creative and a bit adventurous with our inventions, we always do so with deep respect for the source material.
We Make Our Own Screens
Most print shops buy pre-made screens. We don't. Every design - be it a raw & minimalistic Riders of Rohan, a filigree Lothlórien, or a multi-layered Bag End Adventuring Society - starts as a hand-prepared screen made right here in our HQ. We coat the mesh ourselves, expose the artwork using UV light, then wash out the emulsion by hand. It takes longer and it’s messy, but it's worth it.
Making our own screens gives us total control over detail and ink deposit, which matters enormously when you're printing intricate Lord of the Rings inspired artwork.
Colors Have Meaning
We mix our own inks. Again, it’s the long way around, but the effort is well worth it. We learned the hard way that inks tend to look and behave completely differently in a bucket than they do when printed directly onto black cotton fabric. We get a lot of praise for our colors being crisp and vibrant, but not loud and unnecessarily flashy.
The trade-off? Many a long night we’ve spent arguing over a particular shade of red, or whether we should add a pinch or green, or a pinch of blue; or whether the print we’re working on looks better in a warm-twilight-greenish-grey vs cold-misty-mauve-grey. Nothing has ever strained our friendship as much as our strong opinions about colors!
The Heat-Press Cure
After printing, each t-shirt goes through a heat-press cure. This step bonds the ink permanently to the fibres of fabric, ensuring smooth, matte finish, while also minimizing future cracking. We cure every piece individually, checking and adjusting temperature and dwell time for each artwork. We use a custom-built heat-press machine, designed and built by a small Polish manufacturer.
The result is a print that stays vibrant after dozens of washes, with a soft hand-feel you won't get from cheaper methods.
